Citrus Fresh Essential Oil Blend

Citrus Fresh is one of the essential oil blends I use quite a bit. I love to put 4 or 5 drops of Citrus Fresh in my water. It makes a delicious, refreshing drink.  It is a combination of 5 different citrus oils plus Spearmint, which gives it that “minty” taste. Orange Essential Oil

Another one in the Citrus line of Young Living Essential Oils is Orange (Citrus sinensis) .  I have to say I LOVE the smell. During the holiday season, I diffused it with Thieves for a wonderful, seasonal smell.  It defiantly put me in the Holiday Spirit!   To “mix it up” in my endeavor to drink more water, I will add a few drops to my water glass.  A Bit About Orange Just Because…

The Spanish and Portuguese brought bitter oranges to the Americas in the 1500s. In Chinese folk medicine, bitter orange was used as a tonic and carminative to treat dyspepsia. Dried bitter orange was used to treat many abdominal and gastrointestinal problems.

In Europe and South America, bitter orange flowers and oil have been used for many medical conditions.

Bitter orange oil is used extensively to flavor many food products, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, frozen dairy desserts, candy, baked goods, gelatins and puddings, meat and meat products, and condiments and relishes.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil is another one of top oils that I use on a daily basis. I keep it on my kitchen counter with my other “daily” essential oils. It makes it very convenient to add it to my water or smell it. Since I started using essential oils, I don’t’ think I’ve missed a day where I have not used lemon. I used to add lemon juice to my water, but now I use Lemon Essential Oil. It is so much easier to add  a drop or 2 to my water or to our morning smoothies rather than squeezing or slicing a lemon.

I also use it when I need a “mood life”.  I diffuse it or will even just sniff it straight from the bottle.   Lemon is one of my favorite odors, it makes me happy!   Honestly… I think of it like sunshine in a bottle.    When I smell it it helps lift my mood- think sunlight sparkling off freshly fallen snow. Yes, it is winter and I live in an area where we get a fair amount of snow.  In my opinion the sparkles off the new snow is a BEAUTIFUL sight!

Lemon Essential Oil

Young Living describes Lemon Essential Oil as:

  • Revitalizing & uplifting
  • Purifying
  • Antioxidant
  • May be beneficial for the skin
  • Refreshing in water
  • Enhances flavor of foods

The Young Living Blog  is also a great resource to find other great uses for Lemon Essential Oil. Be sure to check it out!

Did you know:

It takes 75 lemons to make one bottle of Lemon Oil & 3,000 lemons to produce one kilo of oil.  Now that’s a lot of lemons!!

d-Limonene

Lemon Essential Oil contains 68 percent d-limonene, ?   As you may recall from my previous posts, Limonene (d-limonene) is a protectant and powerful antioxidant that is contained in the peels of citrus fruits i.e. grapefruit, orange and lemon. (Essential oils are included in this too!)   To read more from the NIH on the protective effects of d-limonen click here

About Lemon, Just Because….

The lemon originated in Southeast Asia. Its history is sometimes unclear because of the confusion with the similarly appearing citron (a closely related species.) It is thought that the lemon may have been depicted in Roman artwork as early as the first century AD.

In the 1600s, physicians became aware that daily intake of lemon juice would prevent outbreaks of scurvy (a disease caused by a lack of Vitamin C) among sailors on long sea voyages. Therefore, English ships were required by law to carry enough lemon or lime juice for each sailor to get 1 ounce daily.

The California lemon industry became established after the gold rush of 1849. From 1940 to 1965, lemon production increased and the United States became a major provider of lemons worldwide.  More than 50% of the US lemon crop is processed into juice and other drink products. The peel, pulp, and seeds are used to make oils, pectin, or other products. To read more about Lemons & so much more click here.

Did you know?

My previous post gave a brief overview of d-Limonene and the importance of it being a powerful antioxidant and protectant. (Click here to read about it from the NIH )  Well… guess what?  Yep, you guessed it… Lime peel oils have those same properties! These properties include: Limonene; limonene/gamma-terpinene; limonene/beta-pinene/gamma-terpinene; and limonene/gamma-terpinene/beta-pinene/oxygenated. This information was found on PubMed.

Limes1

Some tidbits about Lime, just because….

Lime is believed to be native to the tropical regions of Asia and the Malay Archipelago. It is thought to have been brought to Persia, Palestine, Egypt, and Europe by Arabs from India.  They think that limes were brought to the United States through Florida during the establishment of St. Augustine in 1565.  Today, south Florida provides more than 85% of North American limes.

In the 1700s, British sailors consumed limes and other citrus fruits on board ships to prevent rickets (Rickets occurs from a lack of Vitamin C)   Hence, the sailors derived the nickname “Limey.”  If you want to read more about limes & where this info came from click here.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

One of my changes I am trying to make in my daily routine is to drink more water. I will admit, I am not a water drinker. Even though I know how good it is for me, I have a hard time drinking the recommended 8 glasses / day.  It is just well… blah & boring to me!  (My sons and hubby drink water constantly, which makes me so happy!  I only wish I found the allure of water that they do.)  I have tried so many different ways to increase my water intake from buying special metal water bottles where I can put fruit in the bottom of it & “muddle it”, to adding lemon/lime juice from the bottle to a glass of water, to floating slices of fruit in it. (Doesn’t floating fruit look pretty?) To be honest, it didn’t make a difference in that it really didn’t help with drinking more water.

water glass

Well… I discovered the Citrus blends of Young Living Essential Oils & that HAS made a difference. I can carry the oils around in my pocketbook & add a drop or two to any glass of water or when I refill my water bottle (Note.. never use a plastic water bottle with Essential Oils it breaks down the plastic-  my family & I have all have a steel water bottle)

 Grapefruit Essential Oils

One my favorites!! Yes, I am one of those people who LOVE grapefruit. Nothing better than cutting one in half & eating it for breakfast! (Hold the sugar please, I like it just as it is!  So Yummy!! )

Grapefruit Essential Oil(5)

Let’s see how Young Living describes it:

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)

  • It has a fresh, citrus aroma that is energizing and uplifting
  • It is rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene
  • It is nourishing to the skin
  • It is a popular oil to use in conjunction with weight management programs

 Did you know?

d-Limonene

Grapefruit contains 88-95% d-limonene?   You may be asking, WHAT is a d-Limonene? Limonene (d-limonene) is a protectant and powerful antioxidant that is contained in the peels of citrus fruits i.e. grapefruit, orange and lemon. (Essential oils are included in this too!)   To read more from the NIH on the protective effects of d-limonen click here

A Bit About Grapefruit:  Just because….

The Greek philosopher Theophrastus (BC 371-287), regarded as the founder of botany, wrote that “citron” could sweeten the breath and was also thought to be an antidote to poison. Later, the Roman naturalist Pliny (AD 23-79) used the word citrus for the first time and labeled the fruit as a medicine. The grapefruit, known at the time as small shaddock, was first mentioned by Griffith Hughes (1707-1758) as the “forbidden fruit” of Barbados. The name grapefruit was said to have been first used in Jamaica in 1814, referring to the clusters of fruit on the trees. In 1823, the grapefruit was introduced in Florida by the French count Odette Phillippe, but it did not gain popularity until the end of the nineteenth century.

Grapefruit juice has been reported to interact with some drugs so be sure to check with you health care provider when taking this.  All this interesting information (& more!) on Grapefruit can be found by clicking here on Drugs.com
