Spring Diffuser Blends

spring-rain

Spring Fever!!  I’ve caught it & it’s not just for Baseball!!   Hopefully the weather where you are is screaming “Spring”.  It sure is here & I am soooo ready to say good-bye to winter!  Let me clarify by saying “Spring” here means 60 degrees one day & 30 the next with snow showers.  Did I mention I am ready to say “Bye-Bye” to winter?  The good thing is that I can make it seem (& smell!) like Spring by diffusing some Essential Oils to create a “Spring Day” on those days when it isn’t exactly “Spring” outside.

The great thing about diffusing, is you can mix & match Essential Oils to create a smell that smells good to you.  You just need to adjust the drops until it is “just right”!  These recipes are some that my family, as well as other people enjoy.  Give these Essential Oil Blends a try & see what you think!  Bonus: some of the Essential Oils (Peppermint, Lemon, Lavender, & Joy) found in these recipes are in the Premium Starter Kit .   An added bonus:  A home diffuser is also in the Premium Starter Kit!   A win-win!!

Essential Oils To Take When Traveling

Essential Oils To Take When Traveling

After the long & cold winter we decided to take advantage of our kids school Spring Break  & go on vacation.   Along with our summer clothes,  flip-flops, & sunscreen I always bring a few key Essential Oils to take when traveling.  Not only will they help protect us from “the different germs”  found in a public places and hotel rooms but other things that might make our trip “less than desirable” such as too much sun, stomach aches, as well as the general stress and anxiety of traveling. My Essential Oils bring a bit of peace of mind  which is so important to help me enjoy our vacation.

I bring a “Travel Essential Oil Bag” & put it in my carry-on where it is extremely accessible.  We all get a little queasy when flying or driving, so being able to grab my oils within a few seconds is imperative!   To be honest, my “Travel Essential Oil Bag”  is my bag of Essential Oils that I carry everyday in my pocketbook with an additional oil or 2!   The easiest way I have found to pack them to get through TSA security is to put them in a quart size TSA approved zip bag.  An added bonus:  most of my Favorite Essential Oils for Traveling are found in the Premium Starter Kit!

My Favorite Essential Oils To Take When Traveling

Favorite Essential Oils for Travel(1)

Thieves

  • Immuno-protective qualities A few drops in our juice every morning to help keep us healthy.
  • Thieves Hand Sanitizer or a couple drops of Thieves rubbed in the hands.  Use in the airplane, at the airport, or any public place. There is nothing worse in my mind then getting sick while on vacation!

Peppermint

  • Stomach Discomfort From Motion- A quick sniff or two helps settle our stomach down in a jiff.
  • Head Tension- a drop on my temples & I’m good to go within a few minutes.
  • Soreness- Mixed with  a few drops of carrier oil & rubbed on my legs or feet if I am feeling the effects of a long day of walking.  Can you say… “Ahhhh!”

Lavender

  • Sun Relief- If we’ve been in the sun a tad too long I rub a few drops of Lavender on the affected area.  It can be either “neat” or mixed with a carrier oil. It is soooo soothing to the skin!
  • Sleep Aid- If we are a little “wound” & can’t quite settle down to sleep, a few drops on the pillow & it is “Nighty-Night” time.

Citrus Essential Oils– (Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Orange, Citrus Fresh)

  • Hydration- I bring a bottle or 2 of citrus essential oils & add a few drops to  our water throughout the day. (Lemon & Lime are 2 of my favorites!)  It helps maintain our hydration when we are being active outside.  Hydration also helps to prevent jet lag!

DiGize-

  • Digestive Discomfort- If we’ve over-indulged a bit from dinner or eaten something that we normally don’t & feel a bit of discomfort in the tummy, I rub a few drops of DiGize rubbed around the navel.  It is a sure bet to help make our tummy feel better.

Peace & Calming

  • Relaxation- When flying, I  take a sniff or two from the bottle before taking off.
  • Stress- It gets a tad crazy trying to get all 5 of us ready, the pets settled & the house in order before we leave the house on vacation.  I will admit to a secret- I am one of “those people” who changes the sheets & mop the floors before leaving on vacation. My husband thinks I’m neurotic my response… We all have “our things” & that is one of mine!  In order to help with my stress, I diffuse Peace & Calming while I’m changing sheets & mopping the floor.  It really does help alleviate some of my stress.
  • Sleep Aid- We will take a sniff or two of Peace & Calming to help “wind” down after a busy day of sight-seeing or “fun in the sun” & to help us get to sleep.

V6- carrier oil.

  • I put it in a TSA approved plastic bottle to use as needed with my Essential Oils

Essential Oils for Sleep

Lately, I’ve been having trouble falling asleep. My mind is racing 500 mph thinking of the “bazillion” things I have to do or didn’t do.  I just can’t seem to relax.   When I eventually fall asleep it seems like my alarm clock is going off within minutes & I am crabby!!  I am one of those people who “need” about 8 hrs. of sleep otherwise I am crabby & tend to get sick. Even in college, I couldn’t pull off those notorious “All Nighters”   I NEED my Zzz’s! (My family can attest to this! 😉

To the rescue…. My diffuser & Young Living Essential Oils!

Oils to Help You Sleep

Essential Oils for Sleep(2)

Some Essential Oils To Help Fall Asleep from Young Living:

  • Lavender– Lavender  has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma.  It is soothing and it is great for relaxing and winding down before bedtime.
  • Valerian  Ok- I must say that this is not the most pleasant smelling oils, but it does work great to help promote a good nights sleep!! (I put a drop on my great toe before getting into bed) & diffuse the room with other oils! Valerian has been used for thousands of years for its calming, grounding, and emotionally balancing influences.  Researchers have pinpointed the sesquiterpenes, valerenic acid, and valerone as the active components that create a calming and restorative effect on the central nervous system.
  • RutaVaLa promotes relaxation by helping to ease tension and relieve stress.
  • Cedarwood– has a warm, balsamic, and woody aroma.  It is relaxing and soothing. I LOVE to diffuse it with Lavender!!
  • Vetiver  has a heavy, earthy fragrance with a touch of lemon. Vetiver oil is  grounding, calming, and stabilizing.
  • Marjoram  is not just for cooking- it also helps you get some Zzz’s!!  It has a woody, spicy aroma. It is a calming oil and has a warming effect on both mind and body.
  • Peace & Calming® is a gentle, fragrant blend. Diffused- it helps calm tensions and uplift the spirit, promoting relaxation and a sense of peace. I love to diffuse it in the evening to help “wind us down.”

Helpful Tips For A Good Nights Sleep & To Develop Good “Sleep Hygiene”

Oil tips:

  • Place a few drops of oil on your feet or great toe
  • Diffuse an essential oil in your bedroom
  • Put a few drops on your pillow
  • Sniff the oil straight from the bottle
  • Mix essential oil with a carrier oil &  massage into the skin
  • Take a relaxing bath before bed with Epsom salts and your favorite calming oil

Some tips from the National Sleep Foundation

  1. Stick to a sleep schedule to go to bed and wake up at the same time, even on the weekends. This helps to regulate your body’s “clock.”
  2. Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. A relaxing, routine activity right before bedtime. Avoid bright lights, excitement, or stressful activities.
  3. Avoid naps, especially in the afternoon.  Those power naps while helping to get through the day,  may prevent falling asleep at bedtime.
  4. Exercise daily. 30 minutes of vigorous exercise is best, but a light exercise is better than no activity.
  5. Evaluate your room. Design your sleep environment to establish the conditions you promote sleep. Your bedroom should be cool – between 60-67 degrees and should be free from any noise and lights that can disturb your sleep.
  6. Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillow.  Make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive. The one you have been using for years may have exceeded its life expectancy – about 9 or 10 years for most good quality mattresses.
  7. Use bright light to help manage your circadian rhythms.  Avoid bright light in the evening and expose yourself to sunlight in the morning. This helps keep your circadian rhythms in order.
  8. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and heavy meals in the evening. Alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine can disrupt sleep. Avoid eating large meals for two to three hours before bedtime. Try a light snack 45 min. before bed if needed.
  9. Wind down. Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity  i.e. reading or taking a soothing bath. Avoid electronic devices such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphones.  The lighting activates the brain which can make it hard to fall asleep,
  10. If you can’t sleep, go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. If possible, remove tv’s & computers from your bedroom. It will help associate your bedroom with sleep only.

I definitely don’t want to be like a George Costanza from “Seinfeld.” Do you?

If you are still having trouble sleeping after trying these oil techniques  & recommendations, speak with your health care provider.

Orange Essential Oil

Another one in the Citrus line of Young Living Essential Oils is Orange (Citrus sinensis) .  I have to say I LOVE the smell. During the holiday season, I diffused it with Thieves for a wonderful, seasonal smell.  It defiantly put me in the Holiday Spirit!   To “mix it up” in my endeavor to drink more water, I will add a few drops to my water glass. It’s a nice change.

A Bit About Orange Just Because…

The Spanish and Portuguese brought bitter oranges to the Americas in the 1500s. In Chinese folk medicine, bitter orange was used as a tonic and carminative to treat dyspepsia. Dried bitter orange was used to treat many abdominal and gastrointestinal problems.

In Europe and South America, bitter orange flowers and oil have been used for many medical conditions.

Bitter orange oil is used extensively to flavor many food products, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, frozen dairy desserts, candy, baked goods, gelatins and puddings, meat and meat products, and condiments and relishes.

A New Beginning

Let me say “Welcome!” to my new blog.  I am a totally newbie to this, so thanks for joining me on this new “adventure.”  I’ve been using Young Living Essential Oils for almost a year now.  At first I was using them just for myself, but over time have gradually added the rest of my family.  Let’s just say they were a bit skeptical, but have gradually joined the band wagon. We have become committed to trying to live a healthy/natural life. This is a big step for us & a bit overwhelming at times I can assure you!

Over the years, I’ve tried various other brands of oils and natural products, but never “loved” them.   After doing some reasearch, (I am one of those people who research things ad nauseum before I buy anything!) I found that YL fit the bill as to what I was looking for- I wanted something that just didn’t smell good, but was actually good for us! I can honestly say that now I LOVE them!

You may be wondering how I started the transformation.  Well, let me tell you….

Water/Internally:  At first, I started out by adding a drop of grapefruit, orange or lime to my water to flavor it. (I have to admit I am not a big water drinker, so this helps me drink more water throughout the day!)  I also add a drop of Thieves to my sons apple juice in the morning- the cloves &  cinnamon in Thieves is a natural complement to the apple juice- think mulled cider or apple pie.   Please note: do NOT add oils to plastic water bottles- the oils break down the plastic & release toxins.

Diffuse: I started diffusing. Every morning before my sons come downstairs, I diffuse Joy, Peppermint, or one of the Citrus Oils to help kick start the day on a positive note.  During the day I might diffuse Purification or Peppermint (if I’m feeling I need a slight nudge to get going.)  At night, I diffuse Peace & Calming or Lavender to help us wind down the day.  If it’s especially trying day, I may even rub a little Lavender on our pillow cases.  It’s sooo much better than counting sheep! 😉

Topically:  Every night I rub diluted Thieves on my sons back & diluted Immunopower on his feet. (I started this in September when school started.)  We just moved back to the Midwest from the East Coast & there are lots of “different germs” here.  I have to say that so far this year (knock on wood…)  we all have been healthy- not even a sniffle!  I also have used the roll on Panaway (that came with my Premium Starter Kit) on my hubby’s back when he “tweaked” it a earlier this fall.  It really did wonders!

Well, that is just a brief  “blip” on how I’m  starting to use my YL oils.   I have soooo much more to learn.  If you are interested in joining me on this new excursion of living healthy &  and natural, or learning more about it- drop me a line or follow my blog. I’d be happy to chat with you about it!
